Coach Buttrick is the Co-Head Wrestling Coach at the University of New Hampshire where he has mentored with Coach Henry Marsh, a member of multiple wrestling halls of fame for seven seasons. As a coach for the Wildcats, Coach Buttrick develops student athletes to reach their personal goals and potentials both on the mat and in the classroom; during his tenure, UNH has boasted multiple Academic All-Americans in every season.
As a competitor, Coach Buttrick had a successful high school and college career that was curtailed by military service. Through High School, he was twice a Maine State Champion, a USA Wrestling Northeast Regional Greco-Roman Champion, and the 1997 Dave Shultz Hall of Fame Award winner for the State of Maine. In college, he wrestled for the NCAA D3 University of Southern Maine in its inaugural season, recording a “most pins as a freshman” record that stood for 12 years into that program’s tenure. After several years with the US Army, he competed at the University of New Hampshire in 2005, winning the Northeast Conference Championship that year.
To his coaching credit, Coach Buttrick has held positions as an Assistant Coach at Marshwood High School (Maine), the Head Coach at Kennebunk High School (Maine), Maine Cadet & Junior “Fargo” Team Head Coach for men and women, Freestyle Director and coach for the Southern Maine Trappers Wrestling Club, and currently works with all ages of athletes at the HammerHead Wrestling Club (Maine) as a Freestyle and Greco-Roman coach for the club. He is certified as a Bronze Coach by USA Wrestling and holds an M2 rating as a Freestyle and Greco-Roman official.
Outside of the sport, Coach Buttrick serves as a Senior Master Sergeant for the New Hampshire Air National Guard’s full-time force as the Antiterrorism Program Manager. He is married to his wife Abigail, who served as a manager for the NCAA D3 Messiah College Wrestling Team for all four years of College. He has two daughters, Is’Bella (10y) and Victoria (18m); Bella has been wrestling for 6 years and was awarded the Outstanding Femal Wrestler Award at the Montreal (Can) Open in 2018.
